Funding

Core funding for this project is provided by a three-year Collaborative Research Grant sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. As part of the “We the People” initiative, the project is designed to encourage and enhance the teaching, study, and understanding of the history of enslavement in America.  Financial support has also come from a University of Tennessee, Knoxville Office of Research SARIF grant (2010).

Project Team

The project involves archaeologists from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the University of Massachusetts, Boston, two historic sites (Poplar Forest in Bedford County, Virginia where the North Hill site is located, and Monticello, which hosts a database relating to slave archaeology where our results will be published) and specialists in K-12 education, website design, and artifact curation.
